Use The Leader’s Map™ to…

Step 1: Get ready:

  1. Write the issue in the form of a question that begins with the word “how.”
  2. If this is a team, estimate 60-90 minutes/individual estimate If this is completed individually estimate 15-30 minutes
  3. Send or make copies of this worksheet for each participant. The Leaders Map tool exercise for print out in word

Step 2: Write your story by following completing the Leader’s Map™

  1. Each person individually answers the suggested questions on the next page for each of the stops on the map (10 minutes)
  2. Each person tells their “story” (2-3 minutes)
  3. After each story, the listeners respond to these three questions (5 minutes per storyteller)

 

    • What we like about this story? What will work? What difference can it make?
    • What could make this story more powerful? What do we have to do to ensure success?
    • What other concerns or questions does this story raise for you?

4. The group synthesizes the story into one story (20 minutes)

Step 3: Share the story with others

  1. Each person tells their “story” (2-3 minutes)
  2. After each, the listeners respond to these three questions (5 minutes per storyteller)

 

  • What we like about this story? What will work? What difference can it make?
  • What could make this story more powerful? What do we have to do to ensure success?
  • What other concerns or questions does this story raise for you?

 

3. The group synthesizes the story into one story (20 minutes)

  1. What is the big idea/solution to the issue?
  2. What is to be accomplished by its implementation?
  3. How will it improve/change the organization?

 

Stop 2: Develop commitment

  1. Who are the major stakeholders whose support will be required?
  2.  Why should they care?
  3.  What do you want them to do?
  4.  How will you win them over?

 

Stop 3: Teach and learn

  1. What do we need to know more about?
  2.  What new organization skills will be required?
  3.  What new leader skills will be required?
  4.  What new employee skills will be required?
  5.  How will we make this happen?

 

Stop 4: Build Community

  1. What are the milestones of success?
  2.  How will we know we have been successful?
  3.  What resources will be required?
  4.  How will organization structures/reporting relationships need to change?

 

Stop 5: Balance Paradox.

  1. What do we have to give up?
  2.  What might derail us?
  3.  Where is the shadow side?
  4.  Is there a negative impact to customers/employees/company?
