Unlock the power of leaders When we hear the words power and leader spoken together, most of us become frightened. We are concerned about issues of control, loss of freedom, strong versus weak, making people do that which they would rather avoid, and manipulation. Of course such attempts to control are often the case.
Successful organizations thrive by aligning the needs of their customers, the talent of their employees, and a vision for greatness. To accomplish greatness requires people who are willing to find their own greatness. The noted psychologist David McClelland sites the need for affiliation, achievement, and power as the necessary leadership conditions to implement change. This definition of power is not about brute force, but the desire to influence, to make a difference.
I do this work because I want to tap into the power created when many leaders work together to create an organization where both individuals and the organization can flourish. Leadership harnesses and energizes individuals to work together to create what may never have developed.
We live in a new age: One that demands that we find the most efficient and effective way to build leadership. Building leadership is the driving force of my life and the focus of my work. I define myself as a strategist, teacher, and catalyst for growth.
My mission is to set a new standard for leadership development. My book, Leading for a Change: How to Master the Five Challenges Faced by Every Leader, was nominated by mgeneral.com as one of the top business books for the year 2000. The implementation of The Leader’s Toolbox® at a Fortune 100 organization and a mid-sized organization is described in The Change Champions Field Guide, which was published in June 2003 by Best Practice Publications. As a principal of Synthesis Consulting, Inc., I have provided innovative solutions for Fortune 50 organizations and for emerging growth companies.
